Alert data Breach: Western Carolina University exposes hundreds of social security numbers -
the Social Security numbers of 555 alumni have Western Carolina been exposed to hackers when a university computer containing the information has been breached.
The affected students had all signed up for a newsletter elders. Their Social Security numbers were stored with their membership information because WCU had used social security numbers as university students identification numbers until last fall.
university officials said they were aware of other attempts to access that data as far back as 2006. There are no reports of any misuse of data this stage.
