WellPoint Inc., a health insurance provider based Tampa, accidentally posted the Social Security and pharmacy numbers or medical records of about 128,000 people on its publicly accessible website, according to a statement by the company this week.
Although it is not known exactly when the data breach occurred, a spokesman for the company said that the personal information of the persons concerned was removed from the website April 2, 2008.
There are reports that at least 71,000 people were affected by the state of Georgia and were members of the health care programs for the poor.
There were no reports of incidents of fraud or identity theft because of the violation, but WellPoint is providing monitoring services credit report for the victims.
