The main selling point for VoIP services is the cost less than traditional phone lines. But as VoIP services are becoming more popular and commonly used, we can expect an additional benefit - greatly improved sound quality. At present, high definition VoIP has a bit of a mythical quality, since the technology is still in development and there are not many readily available information at present. Iristel introduced HD VoIP in Canada on 1 February 2007, stating that the difference in quality is comparable to upgrade from an old AM radio to CD.

In addition to Skype-to-Skype calls, however, HD VoIP are not yet available in the US One problem with HD VoIP is the fact that if both parties have a VoIP HD service, it is not likely the caller will notice improved audio quality.
