On August 24, Glasgow Sunday Herald reported that hackers had broken into the reservation system Best Western line and stole 8 million customers recordings. The Scottish newspaper said the data breach assigned to each client who stayed at any Best Western Hotel Europe in 2007 or 2008. The story was picked up by countless other publications. Yet Best Western insists that if a data breach occurs, only 10 customers in one hotel in Berlin were affected. The Sunday Herald journalist who came up with the number 8 million made by simply extrapolating the number of Best Western hotels and hotel rooms in Europe. The journalist has not responded to questions about the story.
Although Best Western would have preempted the exaggerated story by revealing the prior violation, their inability to do so is understandable, given that the violation took place only three days before the story broke and violation only affected 10 customers.
