This is according to a recent national survey conducted by the Ponemon Institute, which found that staff turnover usually results in significant loss of corporate data.

The report of the results of Symantec sponsored survey revealed that 59% of employees who left the company for some reason had stolen company data prior to departure, even if 79% admitted that they violated company rules by doing so. Other common types of business information stolen included the history of computer and paper files (62% of respondents), CDs and DVDs (53%) and small USB drives (42%) . The rarest type of business data was stolen source code, which has been taken by only 3% of respondents.

Not surprisingly, the survey results also found that disgruntled employees were almost three times more likely to steal company information (61%) than employees who have loved and respected companies they left (26%).

The report of the survey results conclude with tips to prevent theft of data on sales employee, advising companies to take measures which included:

  • conducting an assessment of the potential loss of data immediately after an employee leaves the company
  • Create or maintain company policies, clearly indicating that former employees will be allowed to access or use any proprietary or confidential information business once they leave
  • implementation of a day-to day monitoring system to keep track of every employee, OSA network access and system resources so discover data breaches when they occur and prevent further damage from occurring
